In July 2022, inflation in Sumatera Utara Province (combined of five cities, namely Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan, and Gunungsitoli) was 0.31 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 111.05. Of the five CPI cities in North Sumatra, all recorded inflation, namely Sibolga at 1.07 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.04 percent; Medan by 0.27 percent; Padangsidimpuan by 0.59 percent; and Gunung Sitoli by 1.81 percent.
Inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in most of the price indexes for the expenditure group, namely the clothing and footwear group by 0.53 percent; housing, water, electricity, and household fuel groups by 0.28 percent; health group by 0.01 percent; transportation group by 1.43 percent; information, communication, and financial services group by 0.32 percent; recreation, sports, and culture groups by 1.83 percent; education group by 0.01 percent; food and beverage/restaurant supply group by 0.12 percent; and the personal care and other services group by 1.15 percent. The groups that experienced a decline in the index were the food, beverage and tobacco groups by 0.07 percent; and group of equipment, tools, and routine household maintenance by 0.33 percent.
The main commodities contributing to inflation during July 2022 include red chili, air transportation, cayenne pepper, house rent, shallots, bath soap, and dragon fruit.
The inflation rate for the calendar year (January-July 2022) is 4.50 percent and the year-on-year inflation rate (July 2022 to July 2021) is 5.62 percent
